How long are cows pregnant?

A cow is pregnant for about 283 days — roughly nine months and nine days. That is the number on every chart, and it is worth knowing that modern herds run shorter: recent datasets put beef cattle nearer 279 or 280. Breed moves it most, from Holstein around 279 to Brahman around 293.

Why 283 is older than it looks

The figure comes from mid-century work that predates every dataset below. The industry then spent four decades selecting for calving ease and low birth weight, and gestation length came down with it. Across 101,787 American Angus AI matings from 2000 to 2020 the average is 278.6 days. Virginia Tech came out at 280.2 across 10,037 records. Holstein sits at 279.0.

Nobody updated the chart. So if your calves keep beating the date, there is probably nothing wrong with your records — the number you are counting from is seventy years old. With low-birth-weight AI sires, extension guidance says calves can come up to three weeks early.

What actually changes the length

Breed is the big one, and the direction it pulls is worth knowing. The twist is whose breed counts: the calf triggers labour, and the calf is half the bull, so it is the service sire that sets the calendar rather than the cow. Black cows bred to a Charolais bull calve like Charolais.

Beyond that the effects are real but small. A bull calf carries about a day and a quarter longer than a heifer calf. Twins come around four days early, and those are the births most likely to need you there. Spring-calving cows run roughly two days longer than autumn ones.

Plenty of things people expect to matter turn out not to. Age of the cow moves it two days at the outside, and the studies disagree on which direction. If she is a long way off the date, look at the bull, then at the possibility of twins, then at whether the breeding date on the record is actually right.

Counting from the right day

Gestation is counted from the day she was bred or inseminated, not from the day you turned the bull in. With a pasture bull and no observed matings you do not have a breeding date, you have a breeding season, and the honest answer is a calving window as wide as that season was.

This is where a preg check pays for itself twice over: it tells you she is bred, and it tells you roughly how far along, which converts a two-month window into something you can plan labour around.

What to do between now and then

Three dates matter more than the rest. Preg check from day 28 with blood or ultrasound, day 42 if you are palpating. Pre-calving vaccinations three to six weeks out, so the antibodies are in the colostrum when the calf needs them. And moving her somewhere you can watch her about two weeks before she is due — earlier for first-calf heifers, who need more looking at and will need it sooner than you think.

Put the breeding date into the calculator above and it lays those out as real dates, and will hand them to your phone calendar if you want them there.

Questions people actually ask

How many months is a cow pregnant?

About nine months and nine days. 283 days works out to 9.3 calendar months, so breed in mid-May and you calve around the third week of February.

The nine-month comparison to humans is close enough to be a useful shorthand and it is the reason most people remember the number at all.

How long does a cow carry a calf?

The same 283 days on average, counted from the day she was bred or inseminated to the day the calf hits the ground. Normal runs from about 278 to 290 days depending mostly on breed.

Do heifers carry longer than cows?

Slightly shorter, if anything, though the difference is small enough that it should not change your plans. What does change is how much attention heifers need: first-calf heifers have more trouble calving than mature cows, so they are the ones worth calving in a pen you can see from the house.

How soon can you tell if a cow is pregnant?

Blood tests pick it up from about 28 days after breeding, and ultrasound from the same point, with fetal sexing possible from day 60. Palpation needs longer — six to eight weeks, so day 42 at the earliest — but it is still the cheapest option if you have a vet who is quick at it.

What are the signs a cow is close to calving?

The udder fills and tightens over the last two to three weeks. In the last day or two the ligaments either side of the tailhead go slack — the tailhead looks like it has sunk — and the vulva swells and softens.

Once she leaves the herd and goes off on her own, she is usually within a few hours. That is the signal most experienced hands actually watch for.

How long is a cow pregnant compared to other livestock?

Cattle are the long ones among the common farm species at 283 days. Horses go longer still at about 340. Goats and sheep are around 150 and 147 days, and pigs are the quick ones at about 115 — the old three-months-three-weeks-three-days rule counts out to 114, a day short of what modern herds do.

Worth knowing

  • 283 days is a planning figure, not a measured average. It predates every modern dataset below. Every modern dataset comes in shorter: 280.2 days at Virginia Tech across 10,037 AI records, 278.6 across 101,787 American Angus matings, 279.0 for Holstein. Selection for calving ease has shortened gestation — Angus lost about 4.3 days between 2000 and 2020.
  • If you are breeding to low-birth-weight "curvebender" AI sires, extension guidance is blunt about this: calves can arrive up to three weeks before the calculated date. Start checking a week before the early edge of the window, not at the middle.
  • Breed is the biggest single lever, and it runs about 14 days from Holstein to Brahman. Bos indicus and Bos indicus crosses should never be run on a 283-day default.
  • Gestation length is highly heritable (0.48 to 0.64), which is why the bull matters so much. Where the breed association publishes a gestation-length EPD, that bull's EPD beats any breed average on this page.
  • A shorter pregnancy costs birth weight — calves put on 1 to 1.5 lb a day at the end, so a 276-day calf can be 10 lb lighter than a 283-day one.
  • Twins average about 4.3 days early, and they are the births most likely to need you there.
  • Red Angus has no separate published figure that we could source. Use the Angus number.
