How far apart the breeds really are
Every dot is a breed average. The shaded band is the normal window for a single cattle — which is narrower than the gap between the shortest and longest breed, and that is the part worth noticing.

The detail, if you want it
The date is the middle of a window
Two cows bred on the same morning can calve nine days apart and nothing is wrong with either of them. Normal spans roughly 278 to 290 days, and the average sits at 283 because that is where the middle of the pile falls, not because 283 is what any particular cow does.
The practical version: get set up a week before the date, and do not start worrying until you are a week past it. If she is two weeks past, the breeding date on your record is the first thing to doubt.
Where 283 came from, and why your cows beat it
The 283 on every feed-store chart comes from mid-century work that predates every modern dataset here. Since then the industry spent forty years selecting hard for calving ease and low birth weight, and gestation came down with it.
Run the numbers on 101,787 American Angus AI matings from 2000 to 2020 and you get 278.6 days. Virginia Tech came out at 280.2 across 10,037 records. The dairy evaluation body has Holstein at 279.0. Angus lost about four days in twenty years, and the chart on the wall never changed.
We still default to 283, because that is what every other chart says and a tool that quietly disagrees with all of them is a tool nobody trusts. But if you are breeding to low-birth-weight AI sires, extension guidance is blunt: calves can turn up three weeks before the date you calculated. Pick your bull's breed above and start checking a week before the early edge, not at the middle.
The bull decides when, not the cow
Labour starts when the calf is ready, and how fast the calf gets ready is mostly its own genetics — which is half the bull. That makes the service sire the thing to look up, not the cow. Embryo-transfer work makes the point cleanly: the length follows the calf, whichever cow is carrying it.
So if you run black cows and turn out a Charolais bull, you are on the Charolais calendar — about four days past what her own breed would give you. Four days is the difference between having the pen ready and being caught out, and it is why the breed selector above asks about the bull.
That is what the heritability figures are telling you as well: 0.48 to 0.64, which is high. Where your breed association publishes a gestation-length EPD for the bull, chase that down and use it.
When you have a bull, not a breeding date
Pasture breeding gives you a season rather than a date, and a calving window as wide as the season was. A 60-day bull turnout means a 60-day calving spread, and no calculator can narrow that for you.
A preg check can. Aging the pregnancy converts that two-month window into something closer to a two-week one, which is the difference between watching the herd for eight weeks and watching it for two.
The dates that matter before she calves
Preg check from day 28 if you are using blood or ultrasound, day 42 if the vet is palpating. Pre-calving vaccinations three to six weeks out, timed so the antibodies land in the colostrum rather than after the calf has already drunk it. Move her where you can see her about two weeks before she is due.
First-calf heifers need all of that sooner and need watching harder. They have more trouble than mature cows and they are less likely to tell you about it in advance.

Built on a 283-day gestation. Dates are month and day only, so this chart works for any year — with one catch: if the pregnancy runs through 29 February, the real due date lands one day later than the chart says. The calculator at the top of the page already accounts for that.
Questions people actually ask
How long is a cow pregnant?
About 283 days, or nine months and nine days. Most cows fall between 278 and 290.
How do you calculate a calving date?
Add 283 days to the breeding date. That is what the calculator above does, and it handles leap years so you do not end up a day out.
Doing it by hand, the rough version is nine months and a week and a half. It gets you close enough to know which month to plan for.
Does breed change the calving date?
More than anything else you can control — about fourteen days from Holstein at 279 to Brahman at 293. Bos indicus and Bos indicus crosses should never be run on a 283-day default.
The part most charts get wrong is whose breed to use. It is the bull's, because the calf triggers labour and the calf is half the bull. Black cows bred to a Charolais bull calve on the Charolais calendar.
Why do my calves come earlier than the chart says?
Because the chart predates every modern dataset. Recent records put beef cattle between 278 and 280 days rather than 283 — decades of selecting for calving ease shortened it, and American Angus alone lost about four days between 2000 and 2020.
If you use low-birth-weight AI sires it can be much more than that. Extension guidance says up to three weeks early. If your calves consistently beat the date, your bulls are the reason and you should be setting up earlier.
How accurate is a gestation calculator?
The arithmetic is exact. The 283 days is an average, so the answer is only as good as that average, and it comes with a two-week spread built in.
The bigger source of error is almost always the input. A calculator run off a guessed breeding date returns a confident, precise, wrong answer.
Can I use this for AI breeding dates?
Yes. Count from the day she was inseminated, same as you would count from an observed natural service.
What if she goes past her due date?
A week over is unremarkable. Two weeks over is worth a second look at your breeding record before it is worth a call to the vet, since a wrong date explains far more late calvings than a genuinely prolonged pregnancy does.
Bull calves run about a day longer than heifer calves, so a late calf is more often a bull. Twins go the other way and come early.

Every modern dataset comes in shorter: 280.2 days at Virginia Tech across 10,037 AI records, 278.6 across 101,787 American Angus matings, 279.0 for Holstein. Selection for calving ease has shortened gestation — Angus lost about 4.3 days between 2000 and 2020.
- If you are breeding to low-birth-weight "curvebender" AI sires, extension guidance is blunt about this: calves can arrive up to three weeks before the calculated date. Start checking a week before the early edge of the window, not at the middle.
- Breed is the biggest single lever, and it runs about 14 days from Holstein to Brahman. Bos indicus and Bos indicus crosses should never be run on a 283-day default.
